RC модел U.S.C.G.C Acushnet - 8

Rudders.

I cut and profile the steering wheel + the upper part, which is in the body (base) of foamed PVC 8mm. I drill from top to bottom with F4mm. I cut the blank into two parts, top (base) and bottom (rudder). I fix the F4 axis in the steering wheel with Poxipol glue, it sets quickly and very firmly. Rudder is ready. The base remains. I drill the base with F6mm. I am making a helm port F6 x 24. A brass tube F6x0.5x20 and two Teflon bushings with an opening F4. I glue the Teflon bushings with instant glue, just in case. I fix the helm port in the base with Poxypol. And the base is ready.

Steering

The place where I have to mount the tillers and bars is quite small. Also, the entire back deck is closed and I won't be able to access them. I need to make some small tillers that are reliable enough, standard ones won't do. The same goes for hinges and rods.

I make the tillers in the following way. I cut them from a 1.5 mm brass sheet. I drill a small hole F1.5 and make an M2 thread and a large hole F6 where I will solder the stopper. The stopper is an aircraft landing gear stopper. The other tiller in the same way, only it is L-shaped. On it, one hinge will be on top and the other on the bottom. The short bar between the handlebars is a 2mm spoke with an M2 ball joint. The long rod between the servo and one tiller is F3 brass with an M3 ball joint. I put a very long rod (28 cm) to have access to the servo machine if I need to change it.

Before assembling the whole system I fill the helm ports with sealing grease. I fill the empty space under the rear deck with Fibran. Because floating models have one major drawback: Sometimes they fill with water and sink!
